The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the Dixon School District's K-2 bilingual teachers' perception and implementation of teaching effective reading strategies to assist bilingual students in improving their reading comprehension and achieving academic success. The researcher purposefully selected the sample of participants from which to collect data through survey, interviews, observations, and archival data (lesson plans). In addition, the three research questions were analyzed in depth: 1. To what extent do bilingual teachers understand the reading comprehension strategies for K-2 bilingual students? 2. To what extent are bilingual teachers implementing reading comprehension strategies? 3. What additional professional development do bilingual teachers need to enhance their teaching strategies? The study revealed bilingual teachers' awareness of their students' learning needs and their ability to adjust their current instructional practices to include additional strategies to get their students reading and achieving academic success in school. The research also revealed bilingual teachers' openness to receiving additional professional development training that will assist them in implementing effective best practice reading strategies for K-2 bilingual students.
