The purpose of this research was to examine the privacy and security of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in public and private cloud networks. Privacy and security of EHRs is important because they contain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of patients. This research determined that the healthcare sector experiences a higher average sector cybersecurity risk, as well as a much higher loss per record, averaging $499 per record, compared to $150 for other sectors. It was also determined that ransomware attacks on the healthcare sector are expected to quadruple from 2017 through 2020 and increase fivefold by the end of 2021. Research determined that in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers were permitted to deviate from established HIPAA regulations to conduct telehealth communications with patients. Although an important and necessary modification, the insecure networks and IoT devices used in these communications poses significant security concerns. EHR systems that utilized cloud computing provided benefits such as data sharing between healthcare facilities across the globe and provided a partial solution for insufficient healthcare Information Technology (IT) professionals. This research revealed that the global healthcare industry is being targeted by cyber threats now more than ever, and cybersecurity professionals must continue to adapt to constant technological changes to protect EHR systems against adversities.
