Acculturation refers to acquiring the language and culture of the host country while maintaining heritage language and culture. This study examined the impacts of parents' acculturation, children's acculturation, parent-child acculturation gaps on the educational involvement and psychological adjustment of Chinese immigrant parents. It also investigated the mediating effect of psychological adjustment on the relationships in which acculturation and acculturation gaps influence educational involvement. Participants were 250 Chinese immigrant parents (Mage = 43.32, SD = 6.04; 75% female) recruited in Chinatowns in New York City. Their children (Mage = 13.81, SD = 2.26; 46% female; 76% US-born) attended middle and high school. Parents completed a survey about their and their perceived children's acculturation in English proficiency, American cultural adoption, Chinese language proficiency, and Chinese cultural maintenance. Parents also reported their educational involvement in school, at home, and in the community and their psychological adjustment, including self-esteem, life satisfaction, and depression. Results showed, first, that parents had lower levels of English and American cultural adoption but higher levels of Chinese language and cultural maintenance than their children. Second, parents' adoption of American culture and children's maintenance of Chinese culture were positively associated with parental educational involvement. Third, parents' adoption of English, children's adoption of English, and children's maintenance of Chinese culture were positively associated with parental psychological adjustment. Moreover, parents who had a smaller parent-child gap in English had better psychological adjustment. Fourth, parental psychological adjustment mediated the relationship in which parents' adoption of English and children's adoption of English were associated with parental educational involvement.
