Background and Purpose: Obesity is a rapidly growing problem with the prevalence in 2017-2018 in the United States at 42.4% among all adults. Obesity is associated with poor quality of life in both physical and mental capacities. The ability to determine the most efficacious treatments will continue to be critical to mitigate the toll on quality of life. This meta-analysis seeks to determine whether an obese individual's quality of life, represented by measures of vitality and mental health, can be influenced by a specific exercise intensity.Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that high intensity interval training increases vitality and mental health more than low intensity walking for obese patients. Methods: Five studies were included after searching the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and EBSCO HOST. The outcome measure used was the Short Form-36 questionnaire. Results: The primary analysis showed no significant effect favoring HIIT or walking for increasing vitality or mental health. A secondary analysis suggests that for obese individuals less than 55 years old, HIIT could potentially increase vitality and mental health more than walking. Conclusion: Until additional research is published in this field, physical therapists must use their clinical judgment when providing an obese patient with a high or low intensity exercise program.
