The rising prevalence of LBP and looming opioid crisis has sparked a need for conservative treatments that effectively manage this condition. Pain neuroscience education and therapeutic exercise are physical therapy techniques that have demonstrated positive outcomes for LBP. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to determine the effectiveness of the combination of these two techniques in the treatment of non-specific chronic low back pain. Methods: This meta-analysis reviewed randomized controlled trials in which pain neuroscience education and therapeutic exercise were the experimental intervention compared to standard physical therapy. Data was analyzed from each study and pooled to generate an overall effect size for pain intensity and functional disability. Results: Four studies were utilized in this meta-analysis with one study requiring an external control group for comparison. Pain intensity and functional disability were found to have a large effect size but did not demonstrate statistical significance. However, a sub-analysis for each outcome measure was performed demonstrating statistical significance for both. Conclusion: This meta-analysis found support for the use of pain neuroscience education combined with therapeutic exercise for the treatment of non-specific chronic low back pain. However, the results must be taken with caution as moderate heterogeneity was present.
