Although anger is commonly accompanied by aggressive impulses, people routinely manage expression to maintain desired social impressions. This study of 120 participants (60 males) investigated cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) associated with effortful impression management during anger expression. After recalling and prior to discussing an angry incident, participants were instructed to tailor their expressions to (a) appear at least as angry as they felt, (b) less angry, or (c) simply present in a clear manner. Half the participants were told their chance of receiving $5 was contingent on their successfully conveying this impression. Manipulations did not alter CVR during the task but did alter recovery, where high incentive to suppress angry affect resulted in the least blood pressure recovery. Rumination was an independent predictor of recovery, with event-focused rumination associated with less vascular recovery and performance-focused rumination predictive of a sustained myocardial pattern. Results support effortful moderation of anger expression and rumination as important determinants of CVR.
