This thesis is my first step in the search for my own approach to drama therapy by exploring the elements which I had found therapeutic in my experience with Taiko (Japanese drumming) in the San Francisco Taiko Dojo. I explore the therapeutic value and the healing elements of ritual, structure and ki in both taiko, practice and drama therapy. The rituals performed in the Dojo at the beginning and the end of the practice seem to help contain the whole practice session and create a safe and special space for the group so that each individual can take risks. The foundation of external structure helps the group members explore more deeply internal emotional and psychological process. The other healing element which I discovered in the Dojo is the Japanese energy concept called ki, which combines psychological energy with the concept of the inseparable relationship of the body and the mind. This thesis will show how those therapeutic elements I found in the Dojo can be useful and important in my drama therapy practice.
