This grounded research study describes the collaborative relationship between SLPs and families currently in family-centered early intervention. The purpose of this research is to provide a complex description of the experiences and practices of families and professionals working together in authentic environments for the child's treatment. Three pairs of clinicians and families allowed participatory observations, video recording of sessions, parent interviews, clinician interviews, and documentation collection. Seven additional pairs of clinicians and families were interviewed, culminating in twenty total interviews. Data was analyzed in a cyclical fashion, and five supra-themes were identified across the participants. The establishment and maintenance of the therapeutic relationship between participants in family-centered early-intervention requires incorporating each of the participants' backgrounds, establishing and meeting participants' expectations, acknowledging the importance of both informational and social interactions during the therapy session, and giving and accepting agency from each of the participants. The individual relationships varied, as shown in the variation of the themes. The collaborative relationship at the heart of family-centered early intervention, however, requires the five supra-themes of background, expectations, information interactions, social interactions, and agency, to be considered by professionals.
