Understanding the assessment practices of psychologists has been a focus of research since the mid-twentieth century. Previous studies focused on the types of tests used and the amount of time spent on assessment, among other common practices in the traditional information-gathering model of assessment. Beginning in the 1970's, psychologists began to develop Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment (C/TA) techniques that utilize the therapeutic opportunities inherent to the assessment process itself to enhance the utility of the time spent on assessment, as well as create positive therapeutic change for the client. However, the use of these techniques throughout the course of assessment has not been well-understood in current practice. This survey of a sample (n=293) of currently practicing licensed psychologists was conducted to better understand current assessment practices, such as specific test usage frequency and feedback practices, as well as the use of and interest in C/TA in the provision of assessment. Results showed that current assessment practices are largely consistent with previous surveys of psychologists, though time spent on assessment and the popularity of certain tests have shifted. As the first survey of C/TA use among psychologists, this study revealed that therapeutic techniques (e.g., elements of C/TA) appear well-appreciated in current practice. Conclusions, limitations, and implications for future research are discussed in light of these findings.
