This thesis is a mixed method study with an explanatory design that starts with a quantitative phase, which is then followed by a qualitative phase that reveals specific results to explain the initial results in detail. The objectives are as follows: (1) to investigate the correlates of physical activity (PA) among Chinese adolescent girls in Hong Kong from a social ecological perspective; (2) to examine the correlates of PA change after one year among Chinese adolescent girls in Hong Kong from a social ecological perspective; and (3) to explore the in-depth mechanism underlying the influence of correlates on PA and PA change among Chinese adolescent girls in Hong Kong from a social ecological perspective. Three stepwise studies were implemented to accomplish these three objectives. The first study (Chapter 3) investigated the correlates of PA among 504 Chinese adolescent girls enrolled in the 7th to 9th grades at four secondary schools in Hong Kong. Adolescent girls' PA was measured with accelerometers and was self-reported. The family household income of the participants was parent-reported, and their BMI information was provided by the PE teachers. Other potential correlates were self-reported by participants. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the association between potential correlates and girls' PA. Only 2% of the adolescent girls met the 60-minute moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) guideline. Adolescent girls engaged 31.59 and 27.30 minutes of MVPA during weekdays and weekends, respectively. Age and peers' expectation were identified as correlates of girls' objectively measured weekday MVPA. No correlate was found for girls' objectively measured weekend MVPA. Age, self-efficacy, peer support, and accessibility of PA equipment at home were significantly associated with girls' selfreported PA. The second study (Chapter 4) examined the correlates of PA change after one year among Chinese adolescent girls in Hong Kong. Three hundred and eighty-four adolescent girls participated in this study. Repeated measures was employed. Hierarchical regression analyses were performed to determine the association between the changes in potential correlates and adolescent girls' PA. None of the girls met the 60-minute MVPA guideline after one year. After one year, adolescent girls' objectively measured MVPA declined 1.80 (5.90%) and 6.28 (23.75%) minutes during weekdays and weekends, respectively. No significant correlate was found for adolescent girls' objectively measured MVPA change. A significant positive association was found between the change in self-efficacy and adolescent girls' self-reported PA change, and the final model accounted for 10% of the variance. The third study (Chapter 5) qualitatively explored the in-depth mechanism of correlates on PA and PA change among Chinese adolescent girls in Hong Kong. Twelve participants were purposely selected on the basis of their PA value in the quantitative phase and divided into four groups (active vs. inactive groups; increase vs. decline groups) for individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis. In conclusion, this study not only identified significant correlates of adolescent girls' PA and PA change using quantitative investigation but also comprehensively gained insight into the influence of the significant correlates on adolescent girls' PA and PA change in Hong Kong. The findings confirmed the notion of SEM that PA was characterized by dynamic interactions of multidimensional factors at multi-levels. Furthermore, the findings of this thesis provided specific strategies for design these significant correlates in interventions to promote adolescent girls' PA in Hong Kong.
