Microfinance banks were established as social and economic development tools for the benefit of the low-income population in small and medium-scale enterprises. The pursuit of double goals of ocial development and financial returns by microfinance banks has resulted in a spring-up o many microfinance banks in the country. Despite this development, the failure of most of the small and medium scale businesses in Nigeria in their premature state, is majorly due to lack or insufficient capital, lack of risk awareness and the absence of financial literacy. This invariably imply that both the financial and non-financial supports to SMEs are still inadequate. The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of microfinance banks' financial and nonfinancial services on the performance of small and medium scale businesses in North Central States of Nigeria. The study employed primary data obtained through questionnaire administration. The study covered formal and informal SMEs in North-central region of Nigeria that use microfinance banks' services. In this study, both descriptive and inferential tools of analysis were employed. Descriptive analysis was used to describe the demographic characteristics of SMEs owners/operators and their use of MFBs financial and non-financial services. The inferential analysis entails the use of ordinary least squares method to achieve the study's objectives. The findings revealed that: MFBs financial and non-financial services jointly have significant impact on SMEs profitability, but individually, only MFBs non-financial services have significant impact on SMEs profitability at p<0.05; both MFBs financial and nonfinancial services jointly and individually have significance impact on SMEs service quality at p<0.05; both MFBs financial and non-financial services jointly and individually have significance impact on SMEs survival, majorly at p<0.05; and MFBs financial and non-financial services jointly do not have significant impact on SMEs employment generation, but individually,some MFBs financial and non-financial services have significant impact on SMEs employment generation only at p<0.1. The study concluded that both the MFBs financial and non-financial services are vital instruments for improved level of SME profitability and service quality, but may not jointly be effective for SMEs survival and their level of employment generation. The study therefore recommended among others that policies to increase the availability of nonfinancial activities of microfinance banks, particularly, those related to the provision of supervision and monitoring and group formation should be put in place in order to further increase SMEs performance in the region. Attempt should also be made to improve the quality of financial services from MFBs for better SMEs performance.
