This study explores how school social workers can facilitate caregiver-school partnerships for the benefit of student achievement. Analysis is guided by constructivism, feminist standpoint epistemology, and critical cultural competence and anti-oppression (CCAOP) theoretical frameworks. The issue of parent involvement is investigated through the perceptions and understandings of seven caregivers who had one or more children enrolled in a local school district within San Joaquin Valley. Data collected from semi-structured interviews found that caregivers understood the importance of their involvement in their children's education and demonstrated a willingness to engage. Nonetheless, there was variance in level of involvement due to differences in children's ages, in school's preferred methods of outreaching for parent involvement, and in the levels of familiarity with their children's schools. Additionally, the caregivers speculated that a school social worker would play a beneficial role in facilitating caregiver-school partnership. However, caregivers could not speak on behalf of experience because they had not previously interacted with school social workers or fully understood what roles they play in the school system. Recommendations from the study include that schools release informational material regarding the different personnel on campus so that caregivers can better navigate school resources. Furthermore, due to the uncertainty of what a school social worker does, it would be helpful for the school to define school social workers' responsibilities.
