As Pallasmaa states in 'The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses': "In memorable experiences of architecture, space, matter and time fuse into one single dimension, into the basic substance of being that penetrates consciousness", time is one component to constitute the experience of space. The importance or the influence on environments of time has been ignored and not appreciated. But time understood as an obstacle that ruins the beauty of the original state despite the fact that time flows endlessly as long as we exist. This thesis investigates how space can be richer when we accept the idea that we will never avoid time passing and when we understand time a spatial component.This thesis explores time as a spatial component through a columbarium and crematorium as a program to question the meaning of time to humans. Where the time of human life ends and sleeps reminds people of precious time we that now we temporarily have. Not only as of the columbarium where people mourn the beloved's deaths and people encounter the deepest emotional moments, but it also becomes a mental refuge to release the stress from the time rush and pressure of busy modern society.The site is located in Brooklyn Navy Yard which is next to East River and is connected to Manhattan and Queens by ferry. Brooklyn Navy Yard is a commercial and industrial space that is a center of manufacturing in New York City. This thesis will understand East River not as a boundary of the city but as one of a program which is a process to get to the site.
