South Louisiana communities live in an environmentally vulnerable region that experienced decades of environmental degradation from the fossil fuel industry and more recently has begun to face the effects of global climate change. As a result, some of these communities are finding ways to be resilient to these threats. This study examines the form that resilience takes. Additionally, this study examines the role environmental organizations have in building and maintaining community resilience. The type of community, social networks, existing infrastructure, and governmental alienation all shape how resilience is built. This resilience is bolstered as national environmental organizations have shifted focus to a more community-oriented approach, a shift that is indicative of the necessary momentum for future resilience to be successful.
