Minority students are lagging behind their nonminority peers in academic achievement and the disparity grows larger depending on the setting in which the academic institution is located. Compounding this problem is the lack of research on minority students' perceptions of their connections to school, their feelings of autonomy, and the impact of their socioeconomic standing on their educational aspirations. In terms of researching the educational experience of resilient students within lower socioeconomic settings, the transformative learning theory is a helpful lens through which teachers can learn more about their students in order to understand and help remedy their academic hardships. Using qualitative analysis techniques, this study sought to complement the existing quantitative literature on self-efficacy within low-income environments. Thirteen middle school teachers in grades 6-8 were interviewed about their varying experiences of academic success and failure. This research intended to support the notion that educators can reference variables such as student self-efficacy with regard to employing supportive strategies.
