Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
Addressing the question of the relationship ofGod to the world, this study argued that Jurgen Moltmann's Trinitarian panentheism fails to communicate the God of the Bible in the Indian context because it does not make a clear distinction between God and the world. The purpose ofthis study was to provide a Bible-based, theologically sound model of divine immanence to aid theological formulation and mission endeavors in an Indian context by rejecting Moltmann's proposal of Trinitarian Panentheism. The study followed an eclectic approach. In chapters 1-4 the study took a descriptive approach: chapter 1 provided various models ofimmanence, the thesis, literature review, and the contribution this study makes to the field ofsystematic theology. Chapter 2 focused on the biographical sketch ofMoltmann; chapter 3 listed various sources he used to arrive at his theology; and chapter 4 described the basic tenets ofMoltmann's Trinitarian Panentheism. Chapters 5-6 have followed an analytical and critical approach which evaluated Moltmann's Trinitarian Panentheism in light of Scripture and orthodox theology. Chapter 7 provided a constructive and pragmatic approach to prove a constructive, practical proposal to formulate a biblically and theologically sound model of divine imminence. During the process ofresearch, this study discovered that the major pillars on which Moltmann erects his Trinitarian Panentheism are marred by problems. Especially, his theological tenets such as the concept of God's being, social model of the Trinity, passibility of God, and biblical and theological hermeneutics, are subject to serious criticism from theologians of diverse traditions. Further, Moltmann's Trinitarian Panentheism invited severe dangers to theological formulation because he failed to maintain a balance between corollary doctrines ofChristianity. In his theology, divine immanence was emphasized at the expense of divine transcendence; the love of God at the expense of the freedom of God; the passibility of God at the expense of God's immutability; ecology at the expense of divine ontology; and universalism at the expense ofpersonal salvation. Consequently, his theology poses more dangers than help. Further, some of the dangerous tenets of his theological system cannot be corrected unless the whole system is abolished or renovated with macro changes. The Triune God who is revealed to humanity in the pages of the Bible is neither identical to creation nor accommodating the world in his being but is distinct from his creation. The presence of God in the world does not argue for the presence of the world in God. Therefore, a biblical model of divine immanence affirms biblical Trinitarianism, a clear distinction between divine transcendence and divine immanence, and divine simplicity. If one evaluates Moltmann's Trinitarian Panentheism in light ofthis biblical orthodoxy, it fails to be both biblical and orthodox. Consequently, Trinitarian Panentheism is not a viable model for theological formulation and missiological endeavors in India.
