Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation suggests a hermeneutical approach faithful to biblical teaching and the work of the Holy Spirit in the hermeneutical process. An historical survey of pneumatology in biblical hermeneutics throughout Western church history is provided and shows how the doctrine of illumination of the Holy Spirit has been shaped by interacting with contemporary thought and convention. Platonic psychology and Enlightenment epistemology remain in American evangelicalism and affect rationalistic tendencies in biblical hermeneutics. An historical grammatical interpretation tends to be practiced without considering the work of the Holy Spirit in biblical hermeneutics. This work explores the contribution of the way Korean churches read Scripture emotionally, experientially, and practically. Focusing on the Korean churches in the early twentieth century, this author identifies a distinct epistemological tradition, that is, a heart-oriented epistemology which originates from Neo-Confucianism and contributes to a distinct hermeneutical and pneumatological understanding. This author scrutinizes how a heart-oriented epistemology led Yongdo Lee's life, theology, hermeneutical approach, and pneumatology. Then, biblical evidence for the role of the Holy Spirit in biblical hermeneutics is examined by focusing on the reading practice, hermeneutical method, and theology which expounds the revelatory work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and New Testament. Special attention is given to the covenant promise and blessing to reveal the hardened heart is circumcised so that believers can internalize the Word of God. As a result, this author suggests a heart-oriented approach to reading Scripture with a renewed heart illuminated by the Holy Spirit, in union with Christ and the church; thereby, participating with the Triune God, who is working in redemptive history.
