Among the ethos of consumerism, Selective Memories / Crossing Boundaries acknowledges the power of consumerism, and proposes to ironically integrate consumptive spaces to circumvent censorships in China, and to reveal repressed conversations. Consumerism, which presupposes that the acquisition of products constructs and empowers one's identity, becomes an intermediary tool that welcomes unexpected participants, and legitimizes sensitive conversations. Transferring the power from consumption to discourse, the appropriation of retail spaces creates a counter-space, camouflaged under an innocent appearance.Formerly a printing house, the site - People's Art Printing House, is located in Beijing and is treated as a paper that can be written and read. Residents visiting the site with the intention to consume, come across pieces of texts and images in shops, and engage with fragmented passages from books that were once or are now prohibited from publication. Brick walls, glass panels, and concrete floors become devices of documentation that give voices to the history that was silenced. Geographic boundaries exist not only on maps, but also in power relationships. The map of Beijing, with the Palace and Tiananmen Square at the center of the city, is a representation of hierarchy. Adjacent to national museums, which house classical art as well as official stories, the printing house offers an alternative spatial program, one based in expressions that are authentic, informal, and local. The spatial programs of the site, such as luxury shops and public grassroots curations, generate a sense of heterogeneity, integrating groups that occasionally come across each other in the city, and encourage conversations that challenge the perceptions of one another.
