There can be conflicting expectations for power relations and self-direction in an international organization with members from different cultural contexts. This study's primary purpose was to understand how several teachers used their personal histories to navigate power relations and agency in an unfamiliar internationally-styled educational organization. The first Research Question explored how teachers' personal histories or backgrounds affected their expectations of agency when they began working at an unfamiliar international school. The second Research Question examined how teachers' actual experiences of power relations affected their agency while working at the school. Finally, the third Research Question explored how teachers' experiences of power relations and agency during their time at the school became part of their personal histories and influenced their teaching and navigation of power relations and agency in subsequent teaching jobs. The study's findings and implications connect via the intersectionality of employee and organizational aims, culture, and outcomes, and therefore may be relevant to a wide range of audiences, including individuals in human resources (HR), DEI professionals, sociologists, anthropologists, and those with any involvement in education, such as teachers, administrators, professional development providers, and university course designers. This intrinsic case study explored the experiences of expatriate teachers before, during, and after their employment at a non-traditional K-12 Indonesian international school that primarily served wealthy Indonesian families with aspirations for their children to attend Western universities. While this is a particularly niche and nuanced context, the study generally revealed how an individual's relationships with their past are crucial for understanding their experiences with power relations and agency in their work. Thus, this study has ramifications for various disciplines. First, the study's implications reflect how organizations, including schools, must support the acclimation of new staff while simultaneously considering how new hires will affect the existing organizational environment. Moreover, organizations must consider how to align the aims of varying stakeholders to create and maintain an organizational culture that supports their constituents' current and future outcomes. Finally, recruiting agencies, including websites posting job vacancies and providing an application portal, must present employees with additional information about the companies they are helping fill job openings.
