This phenomenological study explored how Philippine activists of the Marcos Era made meaning of their varied sacrifices and loss in their role as political activists. By opposing the oppressive political regime that claimed many lives and witnessing scores of human rights violations, these activists' perspective of their experience offers valuable insight into the long-term psychological impact of political activism. The aim of this study was therefore to increase understanding of how these activists derive meaning from their lived experiences in a way that facilitates their ability to cope, as well as determine how culturally specific elements influence the process of meaning making. Cultural psychology and the meaning making model were used to frame how culture shaped the activists' construction of meaning. Ten Philippine men and women aged 65 to 80 comprised the sample for this study. These participants were political activists when they were imprisoned in or around 1978 when Senator Benigno Aquino founded his political party, Lakas ng Bayan. Individual interviews were used to collect data, and a thematic analysis was conducted to highlight the themes from the interviews. The key themes identified to implicate meaning making were (a) personal sacrifices as contributions to a common cause, (b) creation, empathy, and receiving care as meaning making processes, (c) personal sacrifice as part of a generational legacy of collective service, (d) collective unity (kapwa) as a basis for the commitment to serve others, and (e) faith as a cause and consequence of sacrifice and service. The cultural value of kapwa and held religious principles embedded in the Philippine culture was pertinent among participants. Both were individually highlighted influencing factors coping with political detainment, torture, numerous human rights violations, and substantial personal loss during martial law.
