This research explores early caregiver-infant interactions and family relationships longitudinally. The central questions are: what are the respective roles of caregiver and infant in the interaction process? How do the caregiver and infant reciprocate their actions contingently to keep the interaction going, to influence each other, and to form relationships? And how do the interactions and family relationships differ across cultures? The study focuses on caregiver-infant spoon-feeding interactions and discipline interactions in American and Chinese families, starting when the infants were 5 months of age and ending when they were 9 months of age. This study is based on extensive, naturalistic videotaping in the homes of the American and Chinese families. Exploratory analyses are based on detailed transcriptions of caregiver-infant interaction. Interaction is viewed as a rule-governed (i.e., convention-based) process. Highly regular action patterns in the interaction process are identified, and based on this, conventions for conducting particular types of interactions are hypothesized. The function and development of interaction structure and cross-cultural contrasts are addressed, relating to available research results on America-China cross-cultural differences. It was found that (a) interaction structures are established as early as 5 months of age, both participants' actions following a well-defined pattern. (b) The hypothesized interaction convention provides rules, either obligatory or optional, to guide both participants' actions. (c) Mutual influences exist in the interaction flow, that is, the caregiver influences the infant's action, and at the same time, the infant influences the caregiver's actions. Both participants have equal importance in their roles of determining the interaction process. (d) There exist cross-cultural contrasts in family interaction and family relationships. The analyses on spoon-feeding interaction show that Chinese caregivers tend to treat spoon-feeding as a task to accomplish at meal time; they would therefore be very persistent in feeding. The child then has relatively less room to participate in other activities. On the other hand, American caregivers are much flexible. The child can play around; the caregivers feed the child or may watch child play. And even spoon-feeding is a part of the game: the child may grab the spoon, take whole control of the spoon, and then play with it. The analyses on discipline interaction show that Chinese caregivers are much more inconsistent in regulating the infants' misdeeds. Compared to the American family, Chinese caregivers relatively often abandon their discipline on the infants. Overall, disciplinary encounters are much more frequent and tend to last longer in Chinese families.
