Using a sample of 4,000 Chinese school children and their families, this dissertation explores the relationships between the rate of change of acceptance of the one-child certificate and the characteristics of individual accepting the certificate, using Cox proportional hazards models. Using principle factor analysis with varimax rotation, two personality dimensions of Chinese children, namely, virtue and competence, are next identified. Finally, the effects of the one child family policy and other factors on these two major personality dimensions are examined using multiple regression analysis. In the Cox proportional hazards models, the important determinants of acceptance are shown to be the individual's socioeconomic characteristics of urban residence and educational attainment, the costs of raising children in terms of time spent with the child and educational expectations, and the demographic variable of family size. In rural areas, exposure to mass media (TV) influenced the acceptance rate, but this was not the case for urban areas. In addition, it is interesting that sex preference was not significant, suggesting that the effect of son preference may be somewhat weak. This analysis thus suggests that the rate of change of acceptance is not solely a function of the government's one child family policy. It also involves an interplay of family and individual characteristics including socioeconomic, demographic, cultural, and economic factors. Two personality dimensions of Chinese children labelled "virtue" and "competence" are identified using principal axis factor analysis with varimax rotation, with rather high reliability. The findings from the multiple regression analyses indicate positive relationships between parent-child relations and the two major personality dimensions (virtue and competence). Also, some variation in the personality characteristics of virtue and competence were explained by educational expectations and the child's gender. In addition, although there do not appear to be any consistently negative effects of being a single child, rural single children tended to be less virtuous, and urban single children tended to be less competent, than their non-single peers. Clearly, these results need further investigation, particularly with regard to their determinants.
