The purpose of the present study was to examine central and peripheral cardiovascular responses to caffeine, alone or in conjunction with a bout of RE, as well as performance of RE with repetitions to failure, in resistance-trained women. Eleven resistance-trained women completed a squat and bench press maximal strength testing followed by two acute RE sessions on the squat and bench press with repetitions to failure. Measures of hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, and arterial stiffness were measured at rest, 50 minutes post-ingestion (caffeine or placebo), 0- and 10-minutes during recovery. There were no differences between conditions on RE performance, hemodynamics, autonomic modulation or arterial stiffness at any time point. There were no significant condition by time interactions for any variable. However, measures of hemodynamics and autonomic modulation were significantly altered from rest during recovery. Specifically, HR and Q were significantly augmented and MAP and TPR were significantly attenuated compared to rest and post-ingestion for at least 10 minutes. Stroke volume was significantly attenuated immediately following RE, however was significantly augmented at 10 minutes compared to rest and post-ingestion. These changes were accompanied by attenuations of autonomic modulation measures specific to vagal activity for at least 10 minutes. Lastly, there were no changes in arterial stiffness at any time point. Collectively, this study suggests that caffeine may not affect RE performance with repetitions to failure, as well as affect resting and recovery central and peripheral cardiovascular measures compared to a placebo. Nevertheless, both conditions significantly altered cardiovascular function.
