The Coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic created the need for further information and research, not only for addressing immediate health effects, but for addressing the long-term effects on mental health as well. This study aimed to investigate the quality and effects of actual social isolation (SOI) and perceived social isolation (PSI) within the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic during the CA mandated lockdown period from March 19th, 2020 to May 8th, 2020. This study consisted of 12 participants and included both students and faculty within the Fresno State Master of Social Work Program and the Department of Social Work Education. The study was conducted via Zoom video call software and utilized a seven-item demographic survey, a 23-item open-ended questionnaire, and a six-item Likert rating scale. Content analysis of the data found several themes that include positive and negative emotional responses, challenges, positive outcomes, and types of living arrangements. Further analysis of the data also found that participants experienced positive and negative affect, and changes to cognition and behaviors. These data had also indicated that most participants reported experiencing symptoms of chronic stress, anxiety, and depression during their experience within the lockdown despite utilization of coping strategies and social support.
