Wetlands contribute significantly to the global carbon budget, but there are gaps in our understanding of their role in the aquatic carbon cycle. Specifically, this research examines lateral exports of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). We conducted a study of lateral dissolved carbon exports in headwater streams draining wetlands in three ecoregions where snowmelt is a significant hydrologic event: boreal, northern temperate, and subalpine wetlands. To advance our understanding of carbon processing in and exports from wetlands, we explore 1) the variability in lateral dissolved carbon exports and yields from wetlands at different latitudes and elevations, 2) the relative magnitude of DOC and DIC yields in wetland stream complexes, and 3) the seasonal and interannual variability in DOC and DIC yields from wetland complexes. We calculate DOC and DIC exports and yields over seasonal and annual timescales at each site and examine changes in lateral fluxes with varying discharge. We compare these fluxes against one another over multiple years to quantify the relative importance of lateral organic and inorganic carbon fluxes from snowmelt-dominated wetlands to surface waters. Our examination of diverse sites offers novel and broad insights into carbon exports from wetlands through the aquatic pathway.
