Greater understanding and early detection of diseases is imperative to developing prevention and mitigation strategies. The Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV) causes high rates of morbidity and mortality in infected fish. This virus has caused large outbreaks in aquaculture facilities and has also had spillover events into wildlife. I have created the bones of a model system of SVCV in the laboratory model animal, zebrafish (Danio rerio). To improve our knowledge of aquaculture threats and viral dynamics, I began by examining the importance of context when studying viral titer (a measure of survival and infectiousness), I found that, despite SVCV being a transmitted through the water, water inhibits its infectiousness relative to buffered cell medium. This was followed by a zebrafish-SVCV challenge study where zebrafish were infected with SVCV following the "natural" route of infection, exposure of individual fish in the water. Following exposure, in some fish, SVCV RNA was detected and quantified from infected fish shedding virus into the water several days after exposure, which continued until they succumbed to virus induced disease. During the challenge, video recordings were made of the behavior of the zebrafish. A decrease in movement occurs in fish confirmed to be infected with SVCV. The timing of the decrease in movement also correlates with first detectable shedding of virus by the infected fish. These finding can help stakeholders inexpensively and noninvasively identify the presence of disease in aquatic environments prior to the onset of gross manifestations of disease and mortality. Furthermore, this model system can continue to be utilized to elucidate disease dynamics and the behavior of disease in aquatic settings.
