This study examined the relationship between credit risk and profitability in selected banks in Uganda. Both the independent and dependent variables were measured using interval data that includes Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Assets (ROA) for profitability and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Non-Performing Loans ratio (NPLR) for credit risk was extracted from the bank's financial statements. The problem that this study addressed was the high interest rates in Uganda that made credit expensive, as banks shielded themselves from potential high credit risk as a result from unsecured loans. The efforts of this study were geared towards providing a modest contribution to literature on credit risk by evaluating its relationship to bank profitability in Uganda and how the relationship contributed to promoting social development of both individuals and their communities. A sample data of 105 observations were collected from a sample size of 15 banks out of 25 different banks. The Pearson correlation coefficient was also performed which determined that there was a significant relationship between credit risk and profitability in banks in Uganda from the period of 2008 to 2017. Uganda's banks averaged at a CAR of 22%, ROE of 23%, ROA of 4% and NPLR of 3% over a period of ten years. The results from the study showed a strong negative relationship between credit risk and bank profitability in Uganda. This conclusion implied that an increase in credit risk did not necessary cause a decline in bank profitability because Uganda's credit culture was still new, and majority of the people didn't use banks for purposes of investment but rather for saving purposes. This study will empower supervisors and management with information about a bank's actual risk profile and its capital position to investors and banking customers. Future studies may improve the study by focusing on determining if the relationship between credit risk and profitability has a causal effect between the two variables.
