Site-specific resistance factors can improve the design of driven pile foundations for superstructures. These resistance factors are crucial for the design and construction aspects, as they govern the design requirements and specifications for construction. AASHTO has implemented LRFD Bridge Design specifications for over three decades; most of the driven pile foundation for superstructure designs adopted these resistance factors from AASHTO for design guidance. However, these resistance factors are broad and not site-specific. To calibrate resistance factors for pile foundation in Colorado-specific site conditions will need research involving full-scale testing of piles. This study proposed two different schemes of full-scale field tests for validation through large-scale laboratory tests. A statistical database from static load tests (SLT) provides a means for the resistance factor calibration. Increasingly, low-strain dynamic pile tests (DPT) have gained acceptance as a reliable and less costly alternative than the traditional SLT counterpart. This master thesis assessed the feasibility of SLTs and DPTs in large-scale pile model tests by driving steel H-pile in the Tiger Cage (T cage). Five (5) W4x13 steel piles instrumented with strain gauges with angle steel protection were driven at 2 ft spacing on the center to mimic the typical highway abutment design on a smaller scale. An in-house pneumatic pile driver was designed, fabricated, and successfully tested for pile driving in T cage. Four essential elements of pile capacity calibration using dynamic pile driving include: SLT, GRLWEAP, PDA, and CAPWAP. During pile driving, PDA (pile driving analyzer) monitored dynamic strains and acceleration. GRLWEAP provides the best estimate of pile performance before pile driving. It provides driving resistance, dynamic driving stress for selecting pile type, and hammer stroke. PDA provides real-time histories of dynamic strain and wave propagation acceleration for use in signal matching in the CAPWP analysis. CAPWAP analysis matches the PDA signals by adjusting the material parameters. CAPWAP gives the final load versus settlement curve for static pile capacity and associated settlement evaluation. Finally, SLT provides static capacity for comparison with dynamic pile capacity from PDA/CAPWAP. Laboratory tests assess engineering properties of the Leyden clay; a static load test was performed on the center pile, instrumented with strain gauges to determine end bearing capacity and T-z curve. Five dynamic pile test with PDA monitoring on four reaction piles and one test pile for capacities at the end-of-initial-drive (EOID) and at the beginning of restrike (BOR) to determine the setup time effect on pile capacities, and to compare the difference with the capacities from SLT. Finally, the measured static load test capacities compared to nominal capacities for the calibration of the resistance factor.
