Catholic charitable work in the United States was traditionally led by priests, women and men religious. Today the leadership is very different. Most agencies are directed by Catholic lay persons who have little training in theology or faith-based leadership. Nearly fifty percent of employees and most clients are from other Christian denominations, faith traditions, and increasingly, people with no identifiable religious affiliation. Given this change, Catholic Charities developed employee training resources on mission and Catholic identity. Most of the material was presented from an exclusively Catholic perspective. In light of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the increasingly diverse make-up of new employees, it seemed important that a more ecumenically and interreligiously sensitive approach be considered for a more effective experience. A training module for new employee orientation was developed that addressed the roots of the Church's social ministry in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, in the history of the Church, and in Catholic social teachings. Parallels were drawn between the values that underlie Catholic Charities' mission and the values inherent in other faith traditions. The pedagogical approach was interactive-brief presentations were followed by small and large group discussions. The measures for module effectiveness are both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data was obtained from the pre- and post-orientation surveys. Qualitative data came from written comments from participants found in the post-orientation surveys, email letters from the two Human Resources Directors, and participants' comments during and after the presentation. Survey data analysis indicates the project reached its goal. It is recommended that three aspects of this module are incorporated into future employee orientations: (1) Emphasize common ecumenical and interreligious values and practices in the module that underlie the mission; (2) Include information on the Church's commitment to ecumenism and interreligious dialogue; and (3) Incorporate information on the national and international network of Catholic Charities. On the national level, two recommendations come from this project: (1) Develop and provide resources on various faith traditions to agencies; and (2) Offer trainings on Christian denominations and non-Christian religious beliefs that intersect with Catholic Charities' mission to agency leadership.
