This dissertation focuses on the intersection of climate change policy, natural resource economics, and environmental sustainability in The Gambia. This research contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the following ways. First, this dissertation enhances our understanding of migration as an adaptative strategy to mitigate environmental and climate risk factors. It informs us of people's willingness to migrate (WTM) from coastal settlements due to current environmental challenges and perceived climate change impacts (see chapter one). Second, the study advances the applicability of remote sensing and GIS-based multicriteria decision-making approaches for site identification-for a new capital city (see chapter two). Third, the study contributes to land-use land cover (LULC) assessment and ecosystem service valuation (e.g., carbon sequestration) in the developing world-the first LULC change detection study in The Gambia (see chapter one). Fourth, this study enhances our understanding of willingness to pay (WTP) for climate change mitigation projects among people in the least developed countries-The Gambia as a case study. The argument that poor people have limited or zero WTP for restoration/mitigation projects due to liquidity constraints may not necessarily be true. Gambians' express high WTP for beach protection despite being poor. It contributes to quantifying the monetary value for coastal ecosystem services provided by nature to a developing country's economy (see chapter four). Finally, beyond academia, the research would help policymakers to understand the economics of natural resources and climate change adaptation options in their decision-making processes.

520 $a Cette these se concentre sur l'intersection de la politique du changement climatique, de l'economie des ressources naturelles et de la durabilite environnementale en Gambie. Cette recherche contribue a l'avancement des connaissances des manieres suivantes. Premierement, cette these ameliore notre comprehension de la migration en tant que strategie adaptative pour attenuer les facteurs de risque environnementaux et climatiques. Il nous informe de la volonte des gens de migrer (WTM) des etablissements cotiers en raison des defis environnementaux actuels et des impacts percus du changement climatique (voir chapitre un). Deuxiemement, l'etude fait progresser l'applicabilite des approches decisionnelles multicriteres basees sur la teledetection et le SIG pour l'identification des sites-pour une nouvelle capitale (voir chapitre deux). Troisiemement, l'etude contribue a l'evaluation de l'utilisation des terres (LULC) et a l'evaluation des services ecosystemiques (par exemple, la sequestration du carbone) dans le monde en developpement-la premiere etude de detection des changements LULC en Gambie (voir le chapitre un). Quatriemement, cette etude ameliore notre comprehension de la volonte de payer (CAP) pour les projets d'attenuation du changement climatique chez les populations des pays les moins avances-la Gambie comme etude de cas. L'argument selon lequel les pauvres ont un CAP limite ou nul pour les projets de restauration/attenuation en raison de contraintes de liquidite n'est pas necessairement vrai. Les Gambiens expriment un CAP eleve pour la protection des plages, bien qu'ils soient mediocres. Il contribue a quantifier la valeur monetaire des services ecosystemiques cotiers fournis par la nature a l'economie d'un pays en developpement (voir chapitre quatre). Enfin, au-dela du milieu universitaire, la recherche aiderait les decideurs a comprendre l'economie des ressources naturelles et les options d'adaptation au changement climatique dans leurs processus de prise de decision.
