Previous research has found that altered band placements during the resistance band sidestep enhance gluteal activation in younger adults. However, little data exists to model the same intra-exercise modifications in older adults. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the effects of altered band placements on gluteal muscle activation in younger and older adults during the resistance band sidestep. Stance leg electromyographic data of three selected hip muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fasciae latae) were collected from 28 resistance trained females, (mean (SD): 15 younger adults, age 22.80 (2.81) years; 13 older adults: age 67.15 (5.47) years). Participants performed the resistance band sidestep in the direction of the dominant leg with four randomized placements (thighs, knees, ankles, and toes). Normalized data were compared within and between subjects using a 2 x 4 repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni adjustments. As band placement moved distally along the lower extremity, hip abductor activation (gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae) progressively increased and did not vary between age groups. The gluteus maximus also demonstrated a progressive increase in activation levels; however, statistical significance was only observed during the toes placement in younger adults. In conclusion, band placement gradually increased muscle activation levels of the hip during the resistance band sidestep. It is expected that a resistance band sidestep performed with a toes band placement would produce similar strengthening effects in the hip abductor muscles of younger and older adults. This suggests that practitioners can utilize similar intra-exercise progressions during the resistance band sidestep when working with different age groups. Keywords: older adults, resistance band, electromyography, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, tensor fasciae latae.
