A significant body of research on international student adjustment shows that students face many challenges in the process of adapting to a U.S. university environment. English language learners, especially those from East Asia, seem to have great difficulties adjusting to the new educational system. Previous studies explored the role of various support services to facilitate adjustment, including specialized English for Academic Purposes curricula and orientation programming. However, not many resources specifically designed for international arts students exist, particularly to help students transition from an intensive English program to full matriculation into an arts degree program. This curriculum is based on the concept that increased language proficiency and academic skills will ease adjustment difficulties for this student population, and thus students' engagement in their courses will increase. The self-paced, nine-module online curriculum focuses on language and skills needed to succeed in a U.S. art school environment.
