Biomedical models have limited utility in predicting and preventing chronicity after distal radius fracture (DRF). Variation in recovery may be related to non-physiological factors, such as clients' behaviors and cognitions, including self-efficacy. Framing these factors within a broader lens of self-management can potentially illuminate the mechanisms and contexts of these associations. The purpose of this exploratory mixed methods study was to describe and understand self-management in adults aged 45 to 74 after DRF. The qualitative-dominant convergent mixed methods design used constructivist grounded theory techniques for the qualitative strand and a cross-sectional design for the quantitative strand. An identical purposeful sample of 31 individuals completed self-administered questionnaires and a semi-structured interview at a single time point 2 to 4 weeks after discontinuation of full-time wrist immobilization. Findings illustrated the relevance of a holistic lens of self-management to frame recovery in this clinical population. Participants described behaviors to address multidimensional sequelae of injury, with varied emphasis on self-direction. Knowledge and beliefs were primarily characterized by uncertainty and were facilitated and constrained by a social context. Participants made meaning of the self-management process as one of transitioning from hurting to healing via three subprocesses of "learning because of my injury," "working and hoping toward healing," and "getting back to my normal self." As per correlational analyses, self-efficacy for managing injury was significantly associated with perceived health. Merging of qualitative and quantitative data highlighted variation in the self-management process and outcome based on level of self-efficacy. Despite points of divergence with chronic conditions, participants' experiences overlapped with chronic disease self-management. Self-management support should, therefore, be considered to optimize recovery after DRF. The study's inferences are strengthened by the use of mixed methods guided by a conceptual framework. However, they are limited by the sampling strategy and homogeneous sample. The study's product of a diagnosis-specific conceptual framework can guide future predictive and explanatory studies of recovery after DRF.
