Lake ecosystems are important resources for human beings and aquatic wildlife species. Mapping lake-level changing dynamics and analyzing the impacts of climatic variables are essential for accurate evaluation of related ecosystem services and water resources. This study investigated fluctuations in the lake level of 329 lakes in Minnesota using Earth observations and in-situ lake level data from 1992 to 2016. A cluster analysis method was used to analyze temporal evolution patterns of lake level, and the relationship between lake-level variations of different clusters and climatic variables were further analyzed. The variables examined included monthly precipitation, annual precipitation, monthly temperature, and annual temperature. The results showed that lake-level variations were featured by spatial-temporal heterogeneity. Each cluster exhibited different changing characteristics. Time series of GRACE-observed terrestrial water storage confirmed that the lake-level changes were associated with hydro-climatological conditions. Also, the possible causes of lake level variations were discussed.
