Research has shown that changes to the economy have created a domino effect whereby workers who have been eliminated from their positions determined that returning to school was the best option towards developing a level of financial stability. During the past 20 years, the demand for online institutions and the accessibility to online degree programs has significantly increased. Understanding how the graduates of these programs can put their skills to use is essential because ensuring that the graduates of these programs are in fact, employable, will assist in the development and expansion of online curricula as well as expansions of the workforce. This exploratory qualitative inquiry research sought to investigate the perceptions hiring managers in the private sector currently have towards employment candidates with earned online degrees. Semi-structured conversational interviews were conducted with 15 hiring managers from the private sector in the Rochester, New York. The results of the research yielded favorable results towards graduates of online degree programs with 67% of respondents demonstrating a favorable posture toward employment candidates with earned online degrees. Twenty percent of respondents indicated an emergent posture towards online degree candidates, and 13% of respondents demonstrating an unfavorable posture towards these candidates. Implications for the research both to the business and higher educational industries, as well as to the body of knowledge are discussed. In addition, recommendations for future research are put forth as well.
