There is a plethora of information regarding the development of organizations and leaders. But understanding the variations of leadership, the effectiveness of differing styles, and the appropriate culture to cultivate allows professionals to guide others through the maze that is the developing workplace. Hierarchical organizations support a very rigid structure for the sake of control and repetitive solutions to predetermined problems; allowing for these stock solutions increases control over outcome and efficiency. Although hierarchies rely on structure for quality assurance, the development of superior and subordinate relationships is just as critical for success. In order to foster the efficient working relationships required in a hierarchical structure, the leadership styles adopted must also garner the trust of other employees and team members. An individual's propensity to trust and the perceived trustworthiness of another are some of the main factors considered when one is deciding to place trust in another, which can be correlated to efficiency in the workplace. Although there are many studies regarding organizations, change, culture, and leadership styles, there appears to be insufficient research on the correlation of hierarchical leadership and the degree to which those direct reports trust their leaders. Evidence that could guide organizational developers through the process of guiding hierarchical organizations could be invaluable in shaping even more efficient and well-managed hierarchical organizations.
