The central purpose of this quantitative research was to explore the phenomenon of Gratitude as a potential moderator in the relationship between Perceived Transformational Leadership (PTL) and Occupational Stress (OS) of employees in the United States. Gratitude has gained unprecedented interest in the realm of Positive Psychology due to its positive cognitive, physiological, and behavioral associations in recent literature (Lowen, 2017). Building on these considerations, this research investigated if Gratitude can serve in a moderator capacity, influencing the strength of the relationship surrounding the perception of transformational leadership and, by extension, how employees are ultimately affected by occupational stress. The conceptual framework for this study incorporated Bass and Avolio's transformational leadership theory of 2004, Lazarus-Folkman's transactional stress theory of 1984, and Lazarus's cognitive appraisal theory of 1994. This study used a variety of previously validated measures (MLQ, GQ-6, and PSS) to assess the existence of a relationship between the variables. Cross-sectional data from a total of 385 participants were collected and examined using IBM SPSS. Findings revealed that in this population, self-reported perceptions of transformational leadership and the interaction effect of Gratitude and Perceived Transformational Leadership did not have much impact on how someone perceives Occupational Stress. Contrary to expectations, a weak positive relationship was found between Gratitude and Occupational Stress. This research provides a platform for future evidenced-based studies and organizational initiatives towards occupational stress prevention and intervention. The findings advanced knowledge regarding how employees perceive leadership and occupational stress through the lens of Gratitude.
