Technology, globalization, and work redesign have changed the 21st century work world. While the need for traditional applied skills remains, intra and inter-personal skills have emerged as components crucial for success; specifically, the ability to cooperate and get along with others, commonly referred to in Organization Development as prosocial behavior and social, emotional and cultural intelligence. The purpose of this applied dissertation study was to enhance those skills through a training intervention designed to develop their common foundation-empathy. Increased empathy levels have been directly correlated to increased job satisfaction, improved individual and team performance, and reduced conflict. Additionally, empathy is a pre-cursor to those crucial skills identified above. An intervention, designed as a 2-day workshop, was created to increase cognitive, affective, and behavioral empathy in US workplace adults. Training sessions emphasized the important elements of empathy; perspective taking, recognizing emotion, withholding judgement, and reflecting emotion, through the practice of mindfulness and awareness and understanding of one's worldview. Exercises were assigned between training sessions and following the completion of the final session to reinforce positive behaviors, encourage retention, and increase the frequency and comfort of application. Nine evaluators; professional trainers, consultants and empathy researchers, provided evaluations of the workshop design. Analysis of the quantitative data collected indicated that evaluators found the workshop's content and design to effectively meet training objectives. Qualitative responses from evaluators' indicated that the training intervention and its topic were valuable and relevant. Evaluators appreciated the incorporation of activities between and following the workshop sessions to encourage continued learning and application of new skills in the workplace. The data supported high interest in the training and its less traditional approach to increasing prosocial and socially, emotionally, and culturally intelligent behaviors in workplace adults through the development of empathy. Following the incorporation of evaluator feedback, and the implementation of a pilot training, future research can determine if the training is successful in developing the skills necessary for enhanced behaviors. Further research will help inform the ongoing debate about whether social, emotional and cultural intelligence can be developed and answer questions regarding the impact on individual and organizational success.
