This dissertation aims at exploring and explaining the domain formation of Suzhou tone sandhi (TS) above the word level. The TS domain corresponds to the prosodic word. The finding of the tripartite division of the syntactic word emerges from the investigation. First, the lexical word forms one independent prosodic word, while monosyllabic prosodic word is not formed within compound. Second, the free function word forms an independent prosodic word depending on its position and syllable amount. Third, the bound function word never forms an independent prosodic word on its own. The finding leads to the generalization that the formation of the prosodic word is governed by (i) the syntactic factor (i.e., lexical vs. functional distinction and free vs. bound distinction) and (ii) the phonological factor (i.e., syllable amount and phonological form). Three research questions are raised: (i) how the syntactic factor affects prosodic parsing, (ii) how the phonological factor affects prosodic parsing, and (iii) how the syntactic factor and the phonological factor interact with each other in Suzhou prosodic word formation. This dissertation adopts an interactional view of the syntax-prosody interface. Specifically, prosodic parsing is governed by the interaction between syntax-prosody mapping and prosodic/morphological condition. First, the harmonic alignment hypothesis of syntax-prosody mapping answers the question on syntactic factor. The hypothesis encodes the information load hierarchy of the syntactic word into the prosodic structure. In particular, the lexical word is optimally aligned with the strong syllable within the prosodic word, and the bound function word is optimally aligned with the weak syllable within the prosodic word. Second, the prosodic and morphological conditions address the question on phonological factor. The prosodic well-formedness condition captures the effect of syllable amount, and the morpheme realization condition captures the effect of phonological form. Third, the interaction of the syntactic and phonological factors is formalized as the interaction among the constraints that govern the syntax-prosody mapping and the prosodic/morphological condition within the framework of Optimality Theory. This dissertation further provides experimental evidence for the generalizations regarding the TS behavior of syllables and the factors in prosodic word formation, by examining the TS patterns and TS domain formation in Suzhou Chinese. The first experiment provides evidence for the three-way distinction of TS behavior within the TS domain, and hence supports the prosodic nature of the TS domain. The other two experiments wug-test the syntactic factor (i.e., lexical vs. functional distinction) and the phonological factor (i.e., syllable amount) in prosodic word formation. They provide evidence that the syntactic and phonological factors are psychologically real, and hence support the interactional view of the syntax-prosody interface. This dissertation is the first to provide a detailed investigation of Suzhou TS domain formation at phrasal level, and it is the first to analyze the TS domain formation by addressing the issue of the prosodic word formation in the syntax-prosody interface. This work is also unique in its attempt to provide experimental evidence for the generalizations obtained from the fieldwork investigations, and hence it provides further support for the prosodic analysis.
