Latinx adolescents are a fast-growing segment of the population in the United States. Alcohol use in this group is disproportionately high and has become a serious public health concern. Among the many social determinants linked to adolescent alcohol use and mental distress (i.e., depression and anxiety), racial and ethnic discrimination is prevalent among Latinx adolescents but rarely addressed in preventive interventions. This study estimated the influence of adolescents' perceived racial and ethnic discrimination on alcohol use outcomes as mediated by their mental distress. In addition, the study estimated the cross-generational effect of racial and ethnic discrimination; namely, how the mothers' perceived discrimination might affect the mental distress and alcohol use of the adolescent. The study used secondary data from the Under Age Drinking in Latino Youth study. The sample consisted of 800 randomly selected inner-city Dominican and Puerto Rican adolescent-mother dyads in South Bronx, New York City. The study used a three-wave panel design and collected data when the youth were in eighth, ninth, and 10th grade. Structural equation modeling with panel analysis in Mplus was used to test the hypotheses. Adolescent alcohol use intentions and behavior were strongly but nonlinearly related. As such, the analyses focused on alcohol use intentions as the primary outcome. The estimated influence of depression and anxiety on alcohol use intentions was by virtue of the common variance underlying depression and anxiety, referred to as generalized mental distress, which is a relatively stable construct across the study periods. Results based on structural equation modeling indicated that self-reported racial and ethnic discrimination experiences by inner-city Latinx adolescents were associated with increases in their immediate and long-term depression and anxiety symptoms, which in turn were associated with more positive intentions to use alcohol. Latinx mothers' perceived racial and ethnic discrimination experiences were associated with increases in adolescents' drinking intentions through increased maternal mental distress and in turn, adolescents' mental distress. Moderation analyses found that racial and ethnic discrimination had larger effects on female adolescents' mental distress compared to male adolescents. Implications for alcohol use and mental illness prevention programs for inner-city Latinx youth are discussed.
