This research study explores the correlation between two different elementary school library models and student success. Library media specialists in elementary school libraries throughout Connecticut were surveyed to determine whether they operated their libraries in a learning commons model or a traditional model. The researcher matched data from the Connecticut State Department of Education Profile and Performance Reports to elementary schools that responded to the survey and determined whether the learning commons models of school libraries yielded higher rates of student success than the traditional school library models. Findings were mixed and indicated that the higher levels of school librarian and classroom teacher collaboration common to the learning commons model positively impacts student success and that school districts that operate learning commons models in individual schools tend to see higher rates of student success than other districts in the state of Connecticut. However, no significant correlation could be made between individual schoolswhose libraries operate as learning commons models and higher rates of student success. The findings of this research study may allow elementary school librarians to understand whether there are benefits to transforming the school library into a learning commons model.
