The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational design was to answer what was not known; to determine if and to what degree a predictive relationship exists between personality traits and job strain for virtual workers in the United States, and if the amount of virtual work moderates this relationship. Using I-O psychology's moderator approach and general framework (MAGF) there were 523 responses and N = 247 were usable. RQ1 found a predictive relationship with job strain in the Five-Factor model personality traits conscientiousness and neuroticism in both measures of job strain for virtual workers (effort-reward ratio (E/RrLN) p = 0.014 and p = 0.002, respectively) and the over commitment (OC) scores (p = 0.020 and p = 0.0005, respectively). The analysis of RQ2 found conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism had a predictive relationship with E/RrLN and were moderated by some categories of virtual work. Additionally, it was also found that in RQ2 conscientiousness and neuroticism had a significant relationship with the job strain of over-commitment and was moderated by for some categories of virtual work. This dissertation adds scientific knowledge to the fields of I-O, differential, environmental, and organizational psychology research.
