Purpose: Alteration in the pattern of motor unit recruitment and a shift in the morphological characteristics of the muscle fibers towards less oxidative Type II fibers are evident post spinal cord injury (SCI). The overreliance on Type II fibers may blunt the oxidative metabolic response during physical activity in SCI. The present study aimed to examine the effect of muscle fiber recruitment patterns on muscle oxygen utilization during treadmill walking in a group of individuals who have incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI). Methods: 5 participants with motor iSCI (Age; 42.2±18.8 years, Male; n=4) completed an over ground locomotor training program (OLT). Muscle utilization/oxygenation and activation of the medial gastrocnemius were measured by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and surface electromyography (EMG) pre- and post-OLT during treadmill walking at self-selected speed. NIRS variables included changes in deoxygenated hemoglobin concentrations, while EMG outcome was change is median power of the power spectrum (PSDMP). Results: A significant increase PSDMP of the EMG signal was observed during two bouts of treadmill walking (49% p= 0.0469 and 48% p= 0.0349, respectively) post-OLT. There was no significant change in muscle utilization/utilization post-OLT. There was no significant effect of PSDMP on HHb/Mb during any of the walking bouts. Conclusions: The main finding of the current study was that PSDMP as measured using EMG significantly increased following 12 weeks of OLT. The recruitment of larger motor units was seen in conjunction with no significant change in HHb/Mb, possibly highlighting an improved oxidative efficiency of recruited fibers.
