This study was an attempt to understand how hypercompetitive graduate college students with ambivalent attachment style described their experience of interpersonal relationships. College graduate students have a higher rate of competitiveness than undergraduate students and others. This competitive nature can lead to positive interpersonal interactions as well as difficulties in interpersonal functioning. However, when attempting to eradicate this problem within this community, issues unique to graduate students must be explored. Yet interpersonal problems have received minimal attention in graduate college student research despite the potential that exploring factors that lead to their competiveness could increase understanding. Hence, this Case Study employed purposeful criterion sampling to gather a sample of graduate students. Eight students contributed to semistructured interviews and answered 8 open-ended questions about their experience of hypercompetitiveness and interpersonal relationships. The major themes that emerged through the data analysis process of highlighting and encoding were building relationships, maintaining relationships, important features of relationships, and behaviors that can harm relationships. Although some of the findings supported the existing literature as it pertained to competitive behaviors of graduate college students, the findings contributed to the body of knowledge about interpersonal relations among hypercompetitive graduate students, despite the limitations of the study. Recommendations for further research include efforts to develop the findings into relationship building tools and quantitative inquiry to improve generalizability.
