Thesis (M.A.)--Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, 2017.
Slow Art Viewing is a method of engaging with art objects for an extended length of time that encourages viewers to approach artworks without preconceived expectations. Slow Art Viewing employs works of art as mediation tools for individuals to combat accelerated tendencies in our current culture and is situated within the larger Slow Movement. It is an individual experience that can later be shared with others. Slow Art Viewing teaches cognitive skills that can be applied to art viewing as well as a broader spectrum of life situations. Finally, the slow, mindful viewing of works of art in a museum or gallery setting does not exclude the use of contemporary technologies. In fact paradoxically, the combining of Slow Viewing with technological devices offers the opportunity for group interaction in a way that audiences conditioned to interacting via social media will find familiar, user-friendly and ideally enjoyable.
