This dissertation presents a synchronic analysis of some aspects of the phonology of a northwestern Saudi dialect of Arabic. There are two main goals of this dissertation. The first goal is to enrich the overall linguistic research by describing and probing several phonological phenomena that are related to word prosody in light of contemporary advancements in phonological theory. The second goal is to broaden the field of Arabic dialectology by presenting new data from an Arabic dialect spoken in northwestern Saudi Arabia that has never been the subject of linguistic documentation and research. The importance of documenting such a dialect stems from the fact that it displays unique phonological patterns that are previously unattested or rare in Arabic. In accounting for these phonological phenomena, the dissertation provides an original analysis that is couched in the framework of Optimality Theory. The major topics covered in this work include the formation of complex word edges where different types of consonant clusters occur word-initially and word-finally (Chapter 2), non-final superheavy syllables and syllabification patterns under moraic theory (Chapter 3), the stress system along with foot construction under metrical stress theory (Chapter 4), and phonologically-governed allomorphy that is determined by the weight of word-final syllables (Chapter 5). The findings of this study show that the dialect under investigation showcases several unusual patterns that differ from other documented Arabic dialects.
