To achieve the recently effective maximum contaminant level (MCL) of hexavalent chromium at 10 mug/L for drinking water in 2014 in California, effective new techniques and processes were required. In this study, on-site pilot scale column tests, using a total of six resins (Purolite A600E, Dowex SAR, Amberlite PWA15, Resintech SBG1, Sybron GW66 and Sybron GW88), were conducted to explore optimizing strong base anion exchange to meet the new standard. In addition to selecting the best performing resin for each site, this study also aimed to investigate the impact of empty bed contact time (EBCT) (0.75, 1.5, and 2.25 minute) and water quality (16 sites from Dixon, Willows, Sacramento, and Salinas in California) on all resins and the impact from hydraulic loading rate (HLR) (30.6, 61.1, 91.8, and 122.2 cm/min) on the best performing resin. Purolite A600E was the best performing resin for most water qualities when the EBCT was longer than 0.75 minute. Different types of impacts from EBCT on the resins tested for chromium removal were observed on all resins compared, while no impact from HLR was observed on the best performing resin. Despite the continuous improvement observed on resins' ability to accumulate chromium as EBCT increased, the enhancement on chromium exchange for most resins stopped when the EBCT reached 1.5 minute and further increases in EBCT showed no impact. Thus 1.5 minute was considered as the general optimum EBCT, although a site specific test is still recommended for resin selection and EBCT impact verification. The statistical model created in this study using the results of the best performing resin suggested that, in addition to the mean sulfur and chromium concentrations, the fluctuations of sulfur and chromium should also be considered when predicting the resin performance for a given water quality. The results and parameters found in this study confirmed that strong base anion exchange is a practical and affordable option for removing chromium from the ground water.
