Lack of sleep continues to be an issue in the U. S. population including the military. Although multiple studies have addressed the prevalence of sleep duration and associated disorders in military personnel, no research have addressed the effect of BMI, stress, alcohol consumption, and use of supplement performance enhancers on sleep duration in military service members. The purpose of this study was to assess sleep duration and association to lifestyle risk factors in Navy Medical Service Corps using data from the Department of Defense Periodic Health Assessment. The analysis included 11,057 certified ePHA records completed from August 1, 2017 and February 28, 2018. The sample was primarily men (72.7%) and enlisted personnel (54.5%). The breakdown of Navy medical personnel are as follows: Hospital Corpsmen (46.7%), Medical Corps (18.0%), Medical Service Corps (17.4%), Nurse Corps (11.1%), and Dental Corps (6.8%). The mean age of the sample was 33.47 years with a standard deviation of 9.2 years. Findings demonstrated 66.7% sleep fewer than 7 hours per night, 62.4% were overweight/obese, 5.4% reported concerned with a major stressor, 2.4% took a performance product, and 4.6 scored high enough on alcohol use to warrant counseling. Results of the correlational analysis showed a significant relationship between sleep duration and the lifestyle risk factors. Findings supported prior studies that reported sleep duration is associated with BMI, stress, alcohol use, and intake of performance enhancing products. The A.T. Still University and Naval Research Center San Diego Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval was granted prior to data collection.
