The U.S Department of Labor reports as the most commonly required skills to perform the top 20 fastest growing occupations within the next 10 years skills known as soft skills. Recent research in bilingualism has opened the possibility of the development of soft skills through bilingualism. Current public education in the United States does not include curriculum particularly designed to develop soft skills and foreign language courses are not required. This study sought to determine whether; a) bilingualism has a difference in comparison to monolinguals on the development of soft skills, b) the impact of the movement from full immersion to partial immersion for bilingual students, and c) which soft skills emerge as the strongest in bilingual students.

520 $a A mixed method design was utilized for this study. The quantitative aspect of the study has a correlation approach. A five-point Likert scale researcher-designed survey was used to collect data. There were 30 questions as part of this instrument. The qualitative part of this study has a phenomenological approach to uncover the relationship between bilingualism and the development of soft skills. A researcher-developed semi-structured, open-ended interview provided data on the development of soft skills in participants. There were 18 questions in this instrument.
520 $a The entire population consisted of 81 participants from a large school district in a Rural Upper-Midwestern State. From the total population, there were 25 bilingual and 56 monolingual participants.
520 $a Based on the data obtained, the quantitative analysis suggests no statistically significant relationship between the development of soft skills and bilingualism. The analysis of the data revealed slightly higher means in soft skill development for bilinguals at the 6th grade level and more consistently for monolinguals at the 9th-grade level, but there was no significant relationship between variables. On the qualitative analysis, findings suggest higher development of empathy and problem-solving skills across grade levels for bilingual students. From the comprehensive analysis of data obtained from all instruments, it can be concluded that there is no statistically significant relationship between bilingualism and the development of soft skills but while sequentially exploring the data, bilingual individuals showed higher development of emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills.
