This study examines the development of children's theatre in Korea from the beginning to the present (1920--1998). Children's theatre in Korea began with the introduction of the Western culture at the end of nineteen century. One of imports of Western culture, Protestant church had operated the Sunday school not only to proselytize but also to enlighten children. Church used the simple dramatic techniques during the Bible lecture at the Sunday school and staged the story of Bible at the religious events---the Ester day, the Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas. It was the burgeoning of children's theatre in Korea. In 1920s the other beginning of children's theatre was rising at the children's literature. The writers of children's literature who studied in Western literature and were the pioneer of the modernization of Korea started to write children's plays for enlightening children new culture partially and for encouraging them the nationalism against the Japanese colony. The contents of the children's play at that time were of propaganda rather than of pure literature. The trend in children's theatre was changed into the pure amateurism after the Liberation (1945). In 1950s teachers of elementary school who understand the educational affect of drama produced children's plays at school as one of events of school literature class day. The plays in the school production were mainly ones which had been written during the colonial period since new play were not yet written. The school play of the 1950s was the first time in children's theatre history, which provided the true aesthetic sensibility and artistic entertainment to children. In 1960s the amateurish school productions developed into the professional children's theatre companies. Professional playwrights for children's theatre were emerged and organized professional companies with school teachers. About twelve companies did active in theatre productions and several dozens plays were produced during the decade. One who led this movement at the 60s was a playwright, theorist and producer, Pyung Joo. He wrote 104 plays and staged most of them in the productions of the company he founded. He also held the workshops of children's theatre for school teachers. His activities had greatly contributed to the development of children's theatre at the 60s. At the 70s children's theatre was stagnated by the introduction and national scope of television broadcasting. The foreign cartoon TV programs aimed at entertainment catalyzed the commercialization of children's theatre companies and the participation of professional adult companies for the commercial purposes in the children's theatre. Amateur productions of children's theatre companies were declined, and grand and elaborate commercial productions were flourishing at the 70s and 80s. Most of the commercial productions were entertaining musicals which had deleterious effect on educational purpose of children's theatre. From the end of the 80s some educators and practitioners of theatre realized the educational importance of children's theatre. They invited the foreign experts of creative drama and educational theatre and held workshops. Through the workshops many educational companies were organized and educational productions of children's theatre increased during the 90s. Today commercial productions and educational ones are paralleled in children's theatre of Korea. During about 80 years children's theatre in Korea has been developing with the social changes of Korea.
